Kelly Aspinall's 2023 Fishing Season: A Tale of Challenges, Success, and Innovation

Kelly Aspinall's 2023 Fishing Season: A Tale of Challenges, Success, and Innovation

The 2023 fishing season for Kelly Aspinall, owner and operator of Charter Tofino and a member of the Gibbs Pro Team, was nothing short of memorable. As a seasoned angler with a passion for exploring new waters and pushing the boundaries of traditional fishing, Kelly's season had its fair share of challenges and triumphs.
-
Fishing Season Overview:
-
Early in June, Kelly embarked on a spearfishing trip to the northern tip of the Island with Yeti, aiming to target Halibut. However, the unpredictable nature of the ocean presented a brutal stretch of weather and visibility issues, forcing them to remain ashore. Despite the setback, the trip allowed for the exploration of new areas and introduced the island's beauty to international fishermen.
-
A surprising twist of events unfolded when the highway closed for two weeks, resulting in an unforeseen break in June charters. This pause became a blessing in disguise, allowing Kelly to focus on rebuilding a new boat. By July, the boat was operational, and the rest of the summer saw successful tests with a new guide and vessel.
-
On the fishing front, the season boasted incredible Chinook numbers, with the jig/squid fishery presenting a mix of challenges and excitement. Unusually calm weather throughout the summer permitted offshore exploration for Albacore, contributing to an overall strong fishing experience. While Coho numbers were slightly down, they remained active until October, providing a steady fishery until the season's end.
-
Areas of Focus:
-
Operating primarily in Tofino, Kelly's movements were limited, with a few trips to Nootka and one quick visit to Port Hardy. The plan for the upcoming summer included returning to Nootka for a few weeks while predominantly staying local.
-
Species of Focus:
-
Charter Tofino targeted a diverse array of species, including daily staples such as Chinook, Halibut, and Lingcod during the summer months. Sablefish and Albacore Tuna were also significant components of their fishing program.
-
Top-Performing Gibbs Products:
-
Kelly highlighted the remarkable performance of Gibbs products during the season. The Guide Series Mooching Rod and the Highliner Mooching Rod withstood the rigors of hard fishing, showcasing durability and preventing wear and tear.
-
In terms of bait selection, Kelly's go-to choices for salmon included The Wee G and Skinny G in Herring Aid, Gold Nugget, and No Bananas. The Delta Squid in UV Pearl and the Mac Fish in Army Truck or Herring Aid were preferred when targeting Chinook feeding on squid.
-
For Lingcod and Halibut, a variety of lures, including Power Paddles, Lighthouse Mega Bites, Cod Jig, and Octopus Lure, were employed based on the depths and conditions. The Octopus Lure, in particular, proved surprisingly effective for catching sizable Lingcod in areas traditionally fished for Halibut.
-
Kelly's 2023 fishing season showcased the resilience of a seasoned fisherman in the face of challenges. With a focus on innovation, exploration, and the strategic use of Gibbs products, Charter Tofino's success in the diverse fisheries of the region sets the stage for another exciting season ahead.
